First Here is a statement from Google about getting a custom URL for Google Plus
‘We’ve started rolling out custom URLs to a limited set of verified profiles and pages on Google+. (In fact, now you can find us at google.com/+googleplus). While we’re not quite ready for everyone to start claiming their own custom URLs, we plan to expand the availability over time, so stay tuned!”
One definite advantage that Facebook have over Google Plus at the moment is the ability to get yourself a nice neat URL for your Profile or Page eg www.facebook.com/joebloggs.
At the moment your Google plus URL looks something like this.
https://plus.google.com/u/0/113387787806936309243/posts
(Which is my official Google Plus URL)
Which is not very memorable and doesn’t look too hot on a business card!
Currently Google Plus do not have this facility for everybody.apparently It is something to do with Google Plus being linked to GMail apparently(maybe a geek could explain it to me!)
If you not one of the lucky few who have a custom URL for Google Plus there are some options for you.
Get Yourself a Domain Name.
You could buy yourself a cheap domain name from domain registrars such as Go Daddy and forward it to your Google Plus Profile.
This could be something like www.joebloggsongoogleplus.com
If you not a techie person then doing this could be quite daunting but there are tutorials on YouTube that can guide you through the process.
Use a Link Cloaker For Your Custom URL for Google Plus
This is if you have a domain name such as www.JoeBloggs.com you can use software to cloak your existing Google Plus URL eg https://plus.google.com/u/0/113387787806936309243/posts
If you use a link cloaker such as Pretty Link which is available as a free plug in on WordPress then your custom URL would look like this:www.JoeBloggs.com/GooglePlus
The Easy Way Of Doing It
Go to http://gplus.to
When you get there simply type in the nickname you would like for your page or profile and then enter the numbers that comes after https://plus.google.com
For example if your google plus page has the address:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/113387787806936309243/posts enter 113387787806936309243
Then voila you have a nice tidy URL like www.gplus.to/joebloggs which you can write down easily or put on a business card.
ImportantThis applies to all the methods in this article:
Use the address of your profile page NOT your Home page
Your Home page is the page with your “Stream” , your profile page has just your posts
Hopefully this article will be redundant soon as Google will just give us a custom URL for our Google Plus profiles as a matter of course!
